Gen. G. R. Morris, the first proprietor, sold a tract of about 18,000 acres of land, including the site of the village, to Silvius Hoard and others. About 1817 Abraham Cooper, of Trenton, N. Y., purchased the tract which thenceforth took his name, and he may be properly called the founder of the village. In the spring of 1818 he moved here and established the first store in this part of the town, in the “old yellow store.” Dr. Abner Benton, for many years a prominent citizen, was the first physician. He came in 1818. In 1819 Abraham Cooper built the stone store, afterwards the Methodist Church. The public house at Ox Bow, a part of the present hotel, was built by Abraham Cooper in 1819, and Solomon Loomis was the first landlord. The post-office at Ox Bow was established in 1819, and Dr. Abner Benton was the first postmaster......The Ox Bow Presbyterian Church, located at Ox Bow village, was organized May 15, 1820, with Abraham Cooper, Abrham Lewis, Reuben Streeter, James Ormiston, James Douglass, Oren Matthews, Percival Hawley, and Abner Benton, trustees. At it organization it had about 40 members, and Rev. James Sanford was installed pastor September 5, 1820. The people worshipped in a brick school-house, on the lot where the present church now stands, until 1839, when the present building was erected, of stone, 40 by 50 feet, and originally cost about $2,200. In 1861 it was enlarged and remodelled, 25 feet being added to the length, the whole costing about $3,000. It has a seating capacity of about 400, and is valued, including grounds and other property, at about $5,000. The church is now without a pastor, and the present membership if 124.

    Will of Bethel Benton

I Bethel Benton of the Town of Seneca County of Ontario and State of New
York being of sound mind and discretion and convinced of the uncertainty of
this mortal life do make this my last will and testament in the manner
    following to wit:
First I give to my wife Mercy Benton all my goods and chattels lands and
tenements except what shall be hereafter excepted to hold for term of her
natural life or while she is my widow upon her paying out of the assets that
shall come to her hands all the charges that shall be against my estate at
the time of my decease. This is my will in case she should survive me but
if she should not then it is my desire that the aforesaid charges should be
paid by Chester H. Benton --- I give to my eldest son Abner eighty dollars
in cash grain or stock at the option of my executors.
    I give to my daughter
Esther one hundred and twenty Dollars in cash grain or stock at the option
of my executors. I give to my son Chester H. Benton all my goods and
chattels lands and tenements in fee except what is hereinafter excepted
after the decease of myself and wife or the survivor
upon his paying the foregoing legacies as hereafter mentioned.
I give to the public for the use of a churchyard the land now occupied as
such upon my premises forever upon their maintaining a fence where the
present one now stands -- I would wish that the foregoing legacies to Abner,
Lucy, Oliver, Elijah and Esther should be paid as soon as convenient after
the estate shall come to the hands of Chester H. Benton
nevertheless I hereby give him ten years after the estate shall come to his
hands to pay the same if in his opinion he should need so long -- It is
further my will that these legacies shall draw no interest. It is my
intention that my wife Mercy shall make use of or sell whatever she shall
see fit of my personal estate for her own convenience in case she should
survive me and remain my widow. And it is my will that Elijah Wilder junior
and Chester H. Benton shall be the executors of this my last will and to
this my last will and testament I hereunto set my hand and affix my seal
this twenty eighth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty-five [28 Sep 1825]
his Signed and sealed in the

  • Note:
Bethel had at least five children by his first wife, including Lucy M.
He did not have any children by his second wife, and appeared to have two by his third wife.

Bethel came to the community in 1797 with a motherless family of young children by Esther Sadler of MA:
    Abner b 1788, Lucy b , Oliver b 1797, Elijah b 1792, and Esther b 1793 all born in MA.
He then married a second time to Bulah Rice of Conway, MA in a Congregationalist Church in Oct 1797 - of
this marriage there was no issue.
He married a third time to Mercy French Hawks of Deerfield, MA in Feb 1800. Chester H. Benton was a child
of this third marriage and was born in Seneca in Nov 1800 and it is he who remained in the Seneca area to
    raise his family.

Dr. Abner Benton followed his brother-in-law, Abraham Cooper, to Jefferson County from Trenton, New Jersey, in 1817 to settle on land purchased by Cooper in the town of Antwerp. This land would later form the hamlet of Oxbow, near the Oswegatchie River.

Benton immediately opened a medical practice in the hamlet, and in 1819, built a federal style brick farm house for himself and his family. Benton quickly became a civic leader in his community, and was the only medical doctor in northern Jefferson County for many years. After his death in 1843, Benton's son, Zebulon Howell Benton, lived in the house with his wife Caroline (daughter of Joseph Bonaparte) up until the 1890's.

Since the 1890's, the Benton House has been occupied by numerous private owners right up to the present day. All owners have kept much of the architectural integrity of the house intact, and the house was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
