"A Universalist society was kept up for a number of years and its members aided largely in building the union church, and Rev. G. Swan, G. S. Abbott, J. T. Goodrich, Rev. Prof. J. S. Lee, D.D., supplied the pulpit for many years. The society is now out of existence. "

| Rev. J. T. Goodrich. This brother, it would appear, must have perished in the Great Fire of Chicago, October 7-9, 1871. It is known that he was to be in Chicago about the time the conflagration occurred,—he being engaged in business connected with the Chenango Silver Mining Company of Colorado. It was subsequently ascertained that he was staying at the time at the Metropolitan Hotel, (which was burnt) that his name was on the register and his bill unsettled. As he has not been seen nor heard from since, his fate can not be doubtful and his greatly afflicted family are forced to the dreadful conclusion that he was carried to heaven in a chariot of fire. We are without particulars of Mr. Goodrich's history, excepting that he had once been pastor of the Universalist Church in Oxford, N.Y., and that more recently he has lived in Wilmington, Delaware. |

Norwich, NY Telegraph - 1871:
It is feared that Rev. JT Goodrich of Ct was among those who perished in the Chicago conflagration. A fruitless search has been made for him, particulars of which are thus given in a letter from Guilford to the Norwich NY Telegraph: "Aaron Bradley, a brother-in-law of Mr Goodrich started for Chicago on the 18th of Oct where he was joined by JC (John Clarence) Goodrich, (from Philadelphia) a son of the unfortunate man, and a most thorough search was made. All hospitals, Asylums and every conceivable place of refuge, were diligently searched, but to no purpose, except to elicit the following facts: The clerk of the Metropolitan Hotel was found and produced the register of the hotel which he had preserved from which it was ascertained that Mr. Goodrich arrived at the Metropolitan on the evening of the 5th of October, and engaged board and suite of rooms for an indefinite period, expecting to remain several weeks, as his family knew. On Saturday evening, Oct 17, several gentlemen, friends of his, met in his rooms for purposes of business. On Sunday he attended Dr. King's Church, but was known to have been in his rooms up to the hour of retiring, and this was the last time he was seen. The hotel caught fire about 3:00 am of Monday. Dr. Smith of Chicago, an intimate friend of Mr. Goodrich, was with him on Saturday and had made an appointment to meet him again on Monday. He is of the firm belief he perished in the flames. A large number of letters, papers etc. intended for Mr. Goodrich remain unclaimed. All are of the opinion that he has met his ultimate death in this terrible manner. Mrs. Goodrich is in Guilford with her friends and has the warmest sympathy of the entire community in this great trial.
