From "Eben Holden's Last Day a-Fishing" by Irving Bacheller - 1907 - pg 52:
"School's Out"
Attention all - the old school's end is near.
Behold the sum of all its lessons here:
If e'er by loss of friends your heart is bowed!
Straightway go find ye others in the crowd.
Let Love's discoveries console its pain
And each year's loss be smaller than its gain.
God's love is in them - count the friends ye get
The only wealth, and foes the only debt.
In life and Nature read the simple plan:
Be kind, be just, and fear not God or man.
School's out."

Pink School House

St Lawrence Quarterly magazine - 1972 says "In 1881 Emery G Woodbridge (son of George) had given one acre of land, located on the corner of the Canton-Ogdensburg and Morley roads, to School District No 7 and a large school house was built there in the same year and was known as the Woodbridge School. With a seating capacity of thirty or more pupils it was used until 1945.....Prior to 1881 a small schoolhouse was located about one mile in on the Morley Road (Slick Street).

From two 1921 articles I found on the historical scrapbook link at the Canton Free Library http://scrapbooks.cantonfreelibrary.org/ : Canton's first school was on the corner of Main & Court Streets where Miner Block stands (Pearls). Apparently the school was then moved to Hodskins Street (School District 6) around 1829 and then to Chapel Street - rear of the ME Church lot in 1839 with Edwin Collins - teacher. This school burned in 1868 or 1869. That the district school was then kept in the old town house on the corner of Pearl and Court St. There were also a few other schools in town, a District School by the railroad crossing, a private school on Church Street near the site of the Russell Home. Susan Barrows daughter of Prosper Barrows- teacher. Also, there was a private school on Chapel Street across from the main school. In 1869 property was acquired from Russell for the Union Free School and other schools went out of existence. The Belfry from the Hodskins St. school was then taken and used as an OUTHOUSE for the Rushton house on Hodskins Street!

Top Left of 1885 Map- Judson Street goes from left to Right along top. Main street on bottom of map.
From Gazeteer 1873-74 - Canton Union School was organized with primary, intermediate and academic departments in 1868, the Canton Academy, founded in 1831, having been merged into it. It was incorporated as the Canton Academy and Union School, by a special act of the Legislature, April 24, 1837, and rendered subject to the visitation of the regents, under that title, Jan 23, 1840. A teacher's department was instituted in the school Jan. 13, 1871, and $176.80 of the Literature fund was apportioned to it that year. The building will accommodate 400 students. Seven teachers are employed. Its library contains 6,000 volumes, valued at $5,000; and its philosophical and other apparatus are valued at $375. Non-residents are admitted to the academic department.
